A Panel Discussion on “Baku Climate Coalition for the Green Transition of SMEs: Belém Status” Held within the Framework of COP30

At the event, it was emphasized that the Baku Climate Declaration, put forward at the initiative of Azerbaijan, is one of the significant platforms for supporting the green transition of SMEs.

A panel discussion on the theme “Baku Climate Coalition for the Green Transition of SMEs: Belém Status” was organized during the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), held in Belém, Brazil.

The primary objective of the discussion was to promote on the international stage the “Joint Declaration on the Baku Climate Coalition for the Green Transition of SMEs”-a global, pioneering initiative introduced by the Small and Medium Business Development Agency (KOBİA) within COP29 held in Baku in 2024-and to expand the network of its partners. The session also aimed to discuss the next steps for the implementation of the Declaration. It should be noted that the number of partners joining the Declaration continues to grow. More than twenty local and foreign institutions, international organizations, and business networks have already joined the Declaration and expressed their support. The Declaration once again demonstrates Azerbaijan’s global leadership in the green transition and its role as a substantive partner in the global fight against climate change. A dedicated website (www.greensme.org) has also been launched for promoting the Declaration and informing its partners.

The panel discussion, held at the Azerbaijan Pavilion and organized by KOBİA, brought together officials, representatives of international organizations, and business leaders.

The session was moderated by Elnur Aliyev, Advisor to the Chairman of the Board of KOBİA. Speakers included Nigar Arpadarai, UN High-Level Champion for Climate Action and COP29 Climate Champion; Gustavo De Lima Cezario, Advisor at SEBRAE; Bahruz Naghiyev, Deputy Executive Director of PASHA Bank OJSC; Matias Urrutigoity, Head of the International Trade Centre’s Office for Latin America and the Caribbean; and Esmyra Javier, Senior Climate Change Specialist at the Asian Development Bank. During the speeches, information was provided on the challenges SMEs face in the green transition process, the existing support mechanisms and experiences of international organizations, and the current status of the “Joint Declaration on the Baku Climate Coalition for the Green Transition of SMEs.” A video overview of the work carried out to promote the Declaration was also presented.

The panel included an exchange of views on the steps to be taken within the Roadmap for the implementation of the Baku Climate Declaration. Participants underlined that the Declaration initiated by Azerbaijan represents an important platform in terms of facilitating the green transition of SMEs.

It should be noted that KOBİA representatives actively participate in the events and presentations held within COP30, taking part in discussions on the contributions SMEs can make to the global climate agenda and their role in accelerating the green transition.
