Digital receipts developed by an Azerbaijani startup to be applied in several foreign countries

The start-up project of the Azerbaijani entrepreneur Rauf Heydarli on the application of digital receipts has received a provisional patent in the United States. In an interview with "vergiler.az", startup entrepreneur Rauf Heydarli, who received a "Startup" certificate from the Small and Medium Business Development Agency (KOBİA) for this project, noted that the project, which was launched in the United States in 2022, were to attract investment in a very short time. The project plans to offer digital receipts to customers both via banking applications and in person.

According to R. Heydarli, more than 4 billion US dollars are spent annually on the production of paper receipts. Azerbaijan businesspersons spend more than 100 million manat per year on paper receipts. Through implemention of this project, entrepreneurs can save up the following costs: "The use of digital receipts is not only efficient in terms of saving paper. The project allows direct import of copies of the digital receipts to customer's e-banking application. Today, shoppers at shopping malls will receive a paper receipt and a VAT refund after scanning the receipt.

In the case of digital receipts, the customer can instantly recover VAT through this application. This is also of substantial importance as the users can collect all their receipts in one application and have these checks made available to them whenever they want. If customers need to return or exchange a product, they can contact the store with that receipt. Entrepreneurs can better understand their customers’ purchasing habits and apply appropriate discounts.”

The entrepreneur believes that in the future, paper receipts can be completely replaced by digital receipts. Where permitted by law, these receipts will be equitable. Noting that transition to digital receipts has already begun in many European countries, R. Heydarli stated that substantial amount of work has been done in this field in Azerbaijan as well, negotiations are currently underway with the relevant state structures for the introduction of digital receipts: "The project has passed the appropriate examination phase in Azerbaijan. The tool we offer is appealing for both parties - both customers and entrepreneurs. As an incentive, we would like to offer a simple form of digital receipts to entrepreneurs free of charge, who can benefit from it while shopping and pay us if they want to insert any information on the receipt, such as advertising, customer service requests, etc."

R. Heydarli pointed out that the investment project in Azerbaijan in the amount of 200,000 dollars received a grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and participated in the Visa Innovation program in Türkiye. Active efforts have been initiated to implement the project in Puerto Rico, as well as in the United States and Azerbaijan, and in parallel, work is underway to launch its implementation in Dubai and Türkiye: "I must also point out that in addition to 200 thousand dollars, we received an investment of 500 thousand dollars from one of the local investors of Azerbaijan, and we are currently trying to close the investment round. We will benefit from this investment to initiate operations in Dubai and Türkiye. In Dubai, one of the local pos terminal companies has already started the integration process. It is commendable that foreign investors show great interest for this project."
