At the panel discussion organized by KOBİA, it was noted that SMEs can contribute to urban development through innovation, green technologies and digitalization.
Within the framework of the Thirteenth Session of the United Nations World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, a panel discussion on the topic “Strengthening the Role of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses as Key Participants in the Building of Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Cities” was held on 21 May, organized by the Small and Medium Business Development Agency (KOBİA).
The event, organized at the Business and Innovation Centre, was attended by representatives of state institutions and international organizations, entrepreneurs, and urban development specialists.
The main purpose of organizing the panel discussion on the relevant topic within the framework of WUF13 was to strengthen the role of SMEs in sustainable urban development and increase their contribution to the formation of inclusive and resilient urban environments.
The event was moderated by Emin Dostiyari, Chairman of the Management Board of the Azerbaijan Food and Beverage Industrialists Association. Speakers included Zehra Zumrut Selcuk, Director General of the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC); Orkhan Mammadov, Chairman of the Management Board of KOBİA; Leyla Bagirzade, Founder and President of the Global Oracle Association for Leaders; Ayaz Salmanov, expert on industrial sustainability and the circular economy; Loredana Scuto, Chief Urban Programme Manager of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); Emil Majidov, Managing Partner of Rotas Consulting; and Rufat Gambarov, Country Director of Synergy Consulting Infrastructure & Financial Advisory. In the speeches, it was emphasized that SMEs play an important role in the sustainable development of cities, and that ensuring their more active participation in urban development policies is important. It was noted that SMEs can make a significant contribution to the more sustainable and inclusive development of cities through innovation, the application of green technologies, the circular economy, resource efficiency and digitalization. At the same time, the expansion of SMEs’ access to financial resources, strengthening of institutional support, and increasing international cooperation were highlighted as necessary directions, and the questions of the event participants were answered.
