The Small and Medium Business Development Agency (SMBDA) of the Republic of Azerbaijan and "Baku Maintenance Service" LLC ("Bakı Abadlıq Xidməti" MMC) have launched a new joint project - the "Flourishing Absheron."
The project aims to contribute to the development of family farms by supporting the local population to generate additional income within the framework of successful self-employment policy implemented in the country. For this purpose, residents of villages and settlements located on the Absheron Peninsula are provided with plants (lavender and rosemary, etc.) to increase greenery and develop agricultural processing. Each family takes care of these plants in exchange for an allocated monthly allowance. The plants are taken back from the families within 6-12 months and replaced with new ones.
The 250 families living in Balakhani settlement have already been provided with 85,000 plants (lavender and rosemary) under the support of SMBDA, "Baku Maintenance Service" LLC, and "BIRGA" LLC. Each family takes care of 250 to 1000 plants within the project.
The next stage of the "Flourishing Absheron" project was implemented in Zira settlement with the support of the Khazar District Executive Power. 250 to 1,000 lavender and rosemary plants were given to each of the 200 families living in the settlement within the project.
In addition to the use of plants grown in the project for landscaping, the project envisages further processing, use in the production of various cosmetic and pharmaceutical products and oils, and export as raw materials.
The importance of the “Prosperous Absheron” project in the current quarantine situation in connection with the coronavirus pandemic is that families will earn extra income by growing plants in their backyards without leaving their homes, thus supporting family budgets.
The scope of the project is expected to be expanded in the future.
